Cool Roof Coatings And The Energy Bill: What The Numbers Show
United Building ConsultantsAugust 4, 20264 min read

A dark, aged roof membrane can reach 170°F on a summer afternoon. A white reflective coating on the same roof will sit closer to 110°F.
Where the savings come from
Lower surface temperature means less heat transfer into the building, a smaller cooling load, and less runtime on rooftop HVAC units. Buildings in southern climates commonly report 10-20% reductions in cooling costs.
Secondary benefits
Cooler membranes age slower, so the roof itself lasts longer. Reduced HVAC cycling also extends equipment life and lowers maintenance spend.
